Saizo Kirigakure is based off of Kirigakure Saizō, a fictional ninja who was known as a member of the Sanada Ten Braves, a group of ten ninja that supposedly assisted the warlord Sanada Yukimura at the battles at Osaka Castle during the final phases of the Sengoku period of Japan. Along with their leader Sarutobi Sasuke, who Sasuke Sarutobi is based off of, he is one of the most recognized of the group. Although Kirigakure Saizō is known as a master of Iga ninjutsu, Saizo Kirigakure is portrayed as a Kōga ninja.
Saizo is portrayed as a calm, elegant, mature, handsome and sometimes feminine young man. The martial artist and author Stephen K. Hayes compared the portrayal of Saizo in the Japanese children books to another ninja "romantic figure," the bandit hero Goemon Ishikawa.

- The name Kirigakure literally means "Hidden Mist"; as such Saizō is often associated with fog and, by extension, illusion magic.
